Let the Day Begin

When does your day start?

I had different jobs that started at various times, 8 o’clock in the morning, 2  in the afternoon, 6 o’clock at night and even the graveyard shift. On the night shift, my days were flipped from most everyone else’s. When my day began, most were ending their day, not a great situation for my social life. Most people schedule their lives around their job or children or something important and their day can begin at different times.

Did you know that when God declared the first day, he had not created the sun or the moon? He separated Light from Darkness but did not create the sun or the moon until the fourth day of creation. (Genesis 1:1-19)

If you read the above bible passage, did you also notice that the day started at night?

Genesis 1:5b and the evening and the morning were the first day.

Did you miss that piece? So, according to God’s Word, the day begins when the sun goes down. So this was his idea, not a specific religion. Most of the world that celebrates a Shabbat celebrates the evening (or sundown) of Friday to evening of Saturday. God set this in place before man was even created.

Why is this important? If God created his own calendar but we don’t observe it anymore, what else could we be missing? Did God have other important events on his calendar that we would benefit from knowing?
